Pre-Vasectomy Sperm Banking
Freeze First!â„¢ Fertility Preservation Prior to the Vasectomy Procedure
The purpose of fertility preservation (also known as sperm freezing, sperm banking, sperm storage, cryopreservation, etc) is to help ensure the possibility for conception at some time in the future. A vasectomy should be considered a life-long method of birth control, but if you think there is any possibility whatsoever that you would like more children later on, MFS recommends sperm banking as a cost-effective method for preserving your reproductive future. The process is very simple:
- Semen is collected into a sterile container
- Blood tests are performed for infectious disease screening
- The sperm sample is divided into several viles for storage
Choosing A Cryopreservation Center
In addition to the Male Fertility & Sexual Medicine Specialists practice, Dr. Bastuba is also the Scientific Director and President of the Fertility Center of California (FCC), an extremely well respected cryobanking facility located in San Diego, California. Many patients are comforted knowing they can store their sperm at a cryopreservation center under the direction of their physician. The Fertility Center of California is conveniently located near Male Fertility & Sexual Medicine Specialists which makes sperm banking a faster and more seamless process. While Dr. Bastuba can provide these services, it is important to us that patients choose a sperm bank they are comfortable with - we will work with any sperm bank of a patient's choosing. If you live outside of the southwestern United States, you may want to use a local cryobank to store your sperm or one of our home freezing kits.
Special discounts are available to MFS vasectomy patients interested in fertility preservation at FCC.
Dr. Bastuba also offers an at-home sperm freezing kit. The kit contains the materials and instructions necessary for patients to produce a usable sperm sample at home or in the hospital. This is useful for patients that live outside of Southern California, and are unable to complete the sperm collection process prior to their vasectomy procedure.
